CEO DATELINE - American Moving and Storage Association seeks merger with American Trucking Associations

The American Moving and Storage Association has taken the first step to become part of the American Trucking Associations, with the former's board voting Tuesday to pursue joining the larger trade group.

AMSA, with more than 3,000 members, has represented the moving and storage industry since 1998, according to a statement by the association. However, the group was formed from the merger of three existing organizations—the American Movers Conference, the Household Goods Carriers' Bureau and the National Moving & Storage Association, the oldest of which was founded in 1920.
AMSA will now begin the process of joining ATA as the newly established Moving & Storage Conference, which will be ATA's advocacy arm highlighting and amplifying moving and storage priorities.
"ATA is excited about the opportunity to join with the moving and storage industry and expand our industry's footprint and advocacy voice," ATA CEO Chris Spear said in a statement. "Welcoming this new group of key members into the federation will significantly increase our ability to reach decision-makers at both the federal and state level."
ATA is an umbrella organization that incorporates a number of affiliates and conferences. The group currently has conferences for agriculture and food transportation, automobile carriers, government freight, and international motor carriers. The Arlington, Va.-based ATA reported $44 million in revenue in its most recent tax filings.
AMSA is a $4 million-revenue association based in Alexandria, Va. It was led by CEO Scott Michael until he stepped down in December 2019. The group's executive committee had formed a search committee to find a successor but so far no one has filled the position. The association now says it has formed a transition committee that will work closely with ATA to reach a merger agreement to be approved by both organization's boards.
